The Reason for Tank Cleaning and Purpose

Vessels and ocean tankers that carries crude oil and other petroleum products from one place to final destination or to the refineries, generate a 1% - 5 % percentage of sludge within the cargo holds and tanks over time. Vessels using heavy marine fuel oils after a period of 2 - 3 years or less have about 10 - 20 M / tons of fuel oil sludge collected in their storage tanks. This oily sludge needs to be removed and clean out accordingly, some of the purposes are:

  1. Reduce the potential corrosion and tank leak
  2. Schedule inspection of the tank and vessel
  3. Schedule maintenance or modification
  4. Decommissioning
